Our 2022 Maison Mittal G2-North Cabernet Franc–Cabernet Sauvignon has been ranked No. 47 in Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Cellar Selections 2026, with 97 points.
“This is a different caliber of wine, a testament to the meticulous nature of this new brand.”
— Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast
For our young house, a place among Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Cellar Selections is an affirmation of what we set out to make: wines with the depth and balance to reward time in the cellar.
The Site: G2-North. In Paso Robles’ Willow Creek District, Bill Gibbs oversees this sister property to the acclaimed G2 Vineyard. Steep slopes and calcareous shale provide the setting for our Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. A tall quadrilateral trellis spreads each vine across four arms, opening the canopy, allowing more even light distribution and promoting smaller berries.
Ageability depends on the relationship between fruit, acidity and tannin: sufficient depth of fruit to remain expressive as the structure softens, and sufficient freshness to sustain the wine through that development.
This is why we write every Maison Mittal wine’s tasting notes over three evenings. We look for increasing aromatic complexity, tannins that become more supple, and fruit that retains its vitality. What interests us is how much the wine reveals as it opens – and whether that greater expression comes with its balance intact.
Evening One. Initially compact and focused, the wine opens with blackberry and dark cherry, framed by caramel and toasted oak. Concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins give it a firm, composed structure.
Over the evening, brighter berries emerge. The oak recedes as the fruit gains definition, and the palate begins to broaden. The wine remains tightly drawn, with considerable depth in reserve.
Evening Two. Cherries and forest berries are joined by pepper, tobacco and espresso. Truffle and damp earth add savory depth, with a suggestion of spiced fruitcake beneath the fresher aromas.
The middle of the palate is broader and more supple. Flavors unfold with greater distinction, and the tannins feel more integrated with the fruit. The concentration of the first evening now reveals a more complex wine.
Evening Three. The fruit remains fresh as the earthy and savory details become more distinct. Mineral notes and lightly toasted rye extend the finish.
The texture is especially compelling: almost feathery tannins sustain the wine’s length. It has become more open without losing definition, retaining the balance that allows it to feel both powerful and poised.
An open bottle cannot reproduce years in the cellar. Its response to air does, however, give us reason to look forward to that development.
