LXV Paso Robles White Wine Sauvignon Blanc

This is not your typical Sauvignon Blanc… This wine is full of lush, playful tropical notes with a rounded mouthfeel giving some seriousness to the wine. Our 2021 Sauvignon Blanc is like taking a trip to Hawaii.

Dragonette Cellars was a huge inspiration behind the making of this wine. Neeta and Kunal had been wine tasting there for years and always loved their Sauvignon Blanc. The playful tropical notes produced from the Musque clone grown from the Vogelzang Vineyard create a wine that transports you straight to a tropical island. When our winemaker, Jeff Strekas, told them he was able to get his hands on the same fruit Dragonette uses to make their Sauvignon Blanc, there was no question that this would be used to become our 2021 Sauvignon Blanc.

Vogelzang Vineyard

Vogelzang Vineyard, located in the Happy Canyon Ava of Santa Barabara has been the birthplace of multiple award winning Sauvignon Blancs, one of the many reasons we were ecstatic to get fruit from this property in 2021. Vogelzang is home to well-drained gravelly loam strewn with rocks and rubble and has been a sustainably farmed site since 1998.

WINEMAKING

The grapes were harvested on the morning of September 9th at about 23 brix. The wine was pressed that same morning and immediately was put into a stainless steel tank to cold settle. Shortly after, the wine was racked into two new and six neutral French Oak barrels for fermentation. As the wine aged, our trusty winemaker, Jeff Strekas, used a method called Battonage – after fermentation, the lees (dead yeast cells and sediment from fermentation) settle to the bottom of the barrels. Jeff went in once every two weeks to stir the lees, resulting in a more serious and rounded mouthfeel.

Tasting our 2021 Sauvignon Blanc

The end product resulted in a wine with an explosion of tropical fruit on both the nose and pallet – Guava, pineapple, stone fruit, and citrus along with hints of melon and cantaloupe. To match the lush tropical notes, the wine has a creamy, almost waxy mouthfeel from the use of battonage.

WINEMAKERS DIARIES

“Inspired by the wines of both the Loire Valley and Merry Edwards famed Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is intended to show a hybridization between the mineral-driven complexity of Sancerre and the pure, incredible tastiness of the Musque clone of SB in California.” – Jeff Strekas, LXV Winemaker.
